Today we celebrate the Independence of our nation. Most people think it is a celebration of freedom. The freedoms we celebrate that were written down by Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, and John Adams in the Declaration of Independence – Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.
For me, on the Fourth of July, I celebrate something a bit different. I celebrate courage.
The summer of 1776, 240 years ago, our Founding Fathers made one of the most difficult decisions in history. The decided to stand up and fight for their freedom and God given rights against the largest military force in the world. They were poor farmers, facing life long British soldiers – but they stood up because they didn’t want to live under the thumb of the monarchy – they wanted to be free.
When our Founding Fathers signed the Declaration of Independence they were committing treason against the crown – they put their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor in each other’s hands.
As you reflect, remember the courage it took to sign the document we celebrate today. We need to have that courage as we stand up for the freedom that built our nation.
